2018 Sweetwater Summer Arts Academy

The Sweetwater Summer Arts Academy is a FREE one week camp offered each summer to over 150 Sweetwater Union High School District students in String Orchestra, Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Dance, Mariachi, and Visual Art. This year it will take place at the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad from June 11 – 16, 2018. 

The intense week closes with student performances and an art exhibit on Saturday, June 16th at Chula Vista High School Jack Tygett Performing Arts Center.

If you are interested in attending the Summer Arts Academy in 2018, please fill out the form below. Make sure you have your parent’s permission to attend the entire week: June 11-16, 2018. If you are planning on attending summer school, please do not apply. You cannot attend both summer school and camp. Last day to submit interest form is March 16th, 2018.

District Baile Folklorico Concert

District Baile Folklorico Concert is Friday & Saturday March 9 & 10, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday Matinee at 2:00 p.m. Location: San Ysidro High School Dr. Maida Torres-Stanovik Performing Arts Center (5353 Airway Road, San Diego 92154) Featuring SUHSD Folklorico groups representing diverse regions of Mexico, displaying traditional costumes, and wonderfully choreographed routines. Tickets are $10

Schools Represented: Castle Park High, Chula Vista High, Hilltop High, Mar Vista High, Olympian High, Otay Ranch High, San Ysidro High, and Sweetwater High.

SUHSD Student Art Exhibition & Award Ceremony

SUHSD Student Art Exhibition is February 16 – April 3, 2018 at the South Chula Vista Library (389 Orange Avenue, Chula Vista, 91911) Featuring middle and high school student artwork from throughout the district. Free admission. Award Ceremony is Friday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m.

District StringFest

District’s 22nd Annual StringFest is Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at Sweetwater High School Gymnasium (2900 Highland Avenue, National City, CA 91950) Featuring hundreds of student performers! District String Orchestra directed by Jennifer Opdahl, District Symphonic Orchestra directed by Greg Caldera and Maren Glover, and the Combined Middle and High School Orchestra directed by guest conductor Mr. Michael Gerdes. General admission is $5 at the door.

Participating Schools: CPH, CPM, CVH, CVM, ELH, ELM, HTH, HTM, MVH, MVA, OLH, ORH, and SYH.

Chula Vista High – SCPA Drama

Chula Vista High School – SCPA presents “Mary Poppins” February 28 – March 2 at 7:00 p.m., March 8 & 9 at 7:00 p.m., and March 10 at 2:00 p.m. Location: Chula Vista High Jack Tygett Performing Arts Center. San Ysidro High Mariachi Program presents Valentine’s Day Mariachi Concert on Thursday, February 8th, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at the San Ysidro High Dr. Maida Torres-Stanovik Performing Arts Center (5353 Airway Rd, San Diego, CA 92154). Featuring special guests: Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Angela Yeung, Javier Rodriguez, and Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego. Tickets are $5 pre-sale and $7 at the door.

Honor Band

HB_adDistrict Honor Band Concert was Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 at 5:00 pm Location: Chula Vista High School – Jack Tygett Performing Arts Center (820 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91911) 

It featured the finest Middle & High School Honor Band Students. Auditions were held in December and were open to all SUHSD band students.  The best players were selected to rehearse and perform under the direction of two special guest conductors for an enriching musical experience.

Olympian High School – Mr. Eric Mabrey

Congratulations to Mr. Eric Mabrey, Olympian High School band director, on receiving the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association’s Outstanding Veteran Music Educator Award on Saturday. Mr. Mabrey previously taught at Chula Vista High, Chula Vista Middle, has been involved in our Summer Theatre Institute and Summer Arts Academy, and is a SUHSD alum. Way to go!”

Sweetwater High School – Visual Arts

Congratulations to Sweetwater High School’s After School Arts Program for creating an impressive mural at Frank Toyota in National City, CA. A formal presentation took place on Friday, January 26th at 3 p.m. The arts program was awarded $500!

District Scene and Monologue Festival

The 2nd Annual District Scene and Monologue Festival was Saturday, January 27th, 2018 from 9AM – 3PM Location: Chula Vista High School Jack Tygett Performing Arts Center (820 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91911)

It featured workshops, dramatic & comedic scenes and monologues adjudicated by professionals. Hosted by Chula Vista High and San Ysidro High Drama Departments. Registration deadline was Friday, January 19, 2018.
