Location: Chula Vista High School – Jack Tygett Performing Arts Center (820 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91911) General Admission is $5 at the door.
Featuring the finest Middle & High School Honor Band Students. Auditions are held in December and are open to all SUHSD band students. The best players are selected to rehearse and perform under the direction of two special guest conductors for an enriching musical experience.

Honor Concert Band: Ms. Jeri Webb, Director of Bands, Westview High School
Honor Symphonic Band: Mr. Douglas Akey, Director of Bands & Music Technology, Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies Music Director, Tempe Symphony Orchestra.
Jeri Webb earned her Bachelor’s of Music from San Diego State University, Teaching Credential from California State University, Long Beach and a Masters of Science, Fine Arts Application from Southern Oregon State University at the American Band College. Miss Webb was fortunate to study with many well known musicians and composers such as: Gary Foster, Eddie Daniels, Allen Vizzutti, Francis McBeth, Alfred Reed, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Johan de Meij and Dallas Brass.
After successfully teaching middle school for nineteen years Miss Webb began teaching at Westview High School in Poway Unified School District in 2002. She has served as a Mentor Teacher for Sweetwater and Poway Unified School Districts. Additionally she has served on the boards of CMEA and SCSBOA and is an active adjudicator and clinician. Miss Webb has conducted the SCSBOA Junior High School Honor Band, San Diego City Schools Honor Band numerous times, Bakersfield Honor Band as well as the High Desert Junior High School Honor Band. She served as the conductor of the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble for five years. She has been named SCSBOA’s County Educator of the Year, CMEA Band Educator of the Year (2003 & 2016) as well as Black Mountain Middle School’s Teacher of the Year. Her groups have received numerous superior ratings and have performed at State Conferences, Washington, DC and in Carnegie Hall.
Douglas Akey began his musical training in the public schools of Elmhurst, Illinois. He attended Arizona State University on a performance scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music (1979) and a Master of Music in Solo Performance (1985). He also studied brass performance for two summers at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts in Alberta, Canada.
Mr. Akey has taught band at the middle level in Arizona for thirty-seven years. His bands have been invited to perform at numerous education conferences, including the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Music Educators National Conference. He is in demand as a clinician, having directed many junior high and high school honor bands throughout the country. Beginning in the fall of 2006, Mr. Akey began a new phase in his career, teaching elementary/middle school band students and Music Technology at the Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies.
In 1985, Mr. Akey received the Stanbury Award of the American School Band Directors Association as the outstanding young junior high school band director in the United States. Since that time, he has gone on to become recognized as an accomplished composer. His works are included on dozens of state contest lists and are performed by bands throughout North America, Europe, Australia and the Far East. In 1996, he was honored as the National Federation of Secondary Schools Music Educator of the Year for Section 7 (Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah).
Mr. Akey is an active performer, having played with the Del Sol Brass Quintet and Arizona Brass Quintet, as well as the Phoenix and Tucson Symphony Orchestras. He currently serves as Music Director of the Tempe Symphony Orchestra.
